OATHS Gardens

The Old Alabama Town Herb Society Gardens

The Old Alabama Town Herb Society (OATHS) came about due to the tireless efforts of several herb-loving ladies in Montgomery, Alabama who came together in 1996 to form an official herb group. The group took as part of its mission the care of the single herb garden that existed at Old Alabama Town, a model village of 19th and early 20th century life, developed and maintained by the Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery. The Landmarks Foundation at Old Alabama Town has graciously hosted the Herb Society since its inception.

Over the years, Herb Society members have designed and maintained four additional herb gardens at Old Alabama Town, and one culinary herb garden at Alabama’s Governor’s Mansion. Through engagement with local schools and the community at large, we seek to widen knowledge of herbs and foster enjoyment in their cultivation. Our annual Herb Day Festival in May has become a downtown tradition – featuring children’s activities, music, various plant and garden related vendors, and educational programs by herbal experts.

The Old Alabama Town Herb Society (OATHS) connects with other organizations that promote sustainable gardening and takes pride in preserving herbal uses that go back centuries. We are also laying the foundation for future generations to reap the benefits of these marvelous plants.
